Matched up with Hazel

With the 2006 Cooper Open just a little over a week away I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those that have signed up to participate or have donated either money or an item to our silent auction. Your thoughtfulness and generosity is certainly appreciated especially by the Cooper family themselves.

For those of you that haven’t yet signed up to play we have an exciting incentive to do so soon. Hazel Mae, anchor woman of Sportsdesk on the New England Sports Network (NESN) will be playing in the tournament with some of our friends from NESN and WEEI. She is looking for a fourth to complete their foursome.

If you’d like to play with Hazel please sign up at www.cooperopen.com before midnight on September 30th (Saturday!) and enter “Hazel Mae” in the “wish to be matched with” field. Your name will be put into a drawing to determine who the lucky golfer will be. If you have already registered and would like to be included in the drawing please reply to this e-mail and you too will be entered.

Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you all on the 7th!

New Worcester Technical High is dedicated

Worcester Technical High School student Michael Jette, left, laughs along with Edwin B. Coghlin Jr., chairman of the Worcester Vocational Advisory Board, when Mayor Timothy P. Murray when Mr. Murray said Mr. Coghlin worked liked a bulldog on the school project.

WORCESTER— On a day heavy with accolade-laden adults, Michael Jette put in a good word from the students.

“Worcester Tech is No. 1 when it comes to preparing students such as myself to go out into the work force … or college,” said the confident senior at Worcester Technical High School.

Michael was a lonely but proud figure on the stage yesterday during a 90-minute dedication ceremony at the new Worcester Technical High. The $90 million school on Skyline Drive, the largest public project in city history, opened to students three weeks ago.

Cooper Open 2007

Dear Friends,

We hope to see as many of you as possible on Saturday, October 7th at the Fifth Annual Cooper Open to be held at Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH.

Since its inception, the Cooper Open has annually been a fun and rewarding day for the friends and family of the Cooper Family. Most of all, however, it is a great day for the Coopers, Ken and Deb and their three beautiful daughters, Monica, Julia and Rebecca.

As most of you know, all three Cooper girls are waging a battle with Mitochondrial Disease, a crippling foe characterized by a failure of a body’s cells to create the energy necessary to fuel the body and its respective organs. Notwithstanding the daily physical struggles these three girls face, the emotional and financial toll on the entire family as a result of the unpredictability of the disease is exhausting and draining. To have a day like this annually provides a huge boost to not only Ken, Deb and the girls, but also their extended family that works so hard to keep family life running smoothly.

The proceeds of the event benefit Marcel’s Way, a New Hampshire based non-profit group for those affected by Mitochondrial Disorders that offers support, information, and financial assistance to families like the Coopers that have been affected by this terrible disease.

This year more than any other we encourage fellow UNH alums who knew Ken and Deb (White) during their time at UNH to participate. Whether you remember them from Williamson or around SAE and the Blue House, we’d love you to join us.

For more information regarding the event or to make your presence felt through a donation if you are unable to attend please log onto www.cooperopen.com and feel free to forward this e-mail to anyone who may have interest.

Sincerely,

Jim Bagley Jon Fox Sean Gallivan Clint Logan Ben Starr

Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber

Hi!

I am walking to help the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute beat cancer. On Sunday, Sept. 17, I will join more than 6,500 walkers in the 18th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. We have a fundraising goal of $4.5 million to help find better ways to treat and prevent cancer in children and adults.

I hope you will support my efforts by contributing to my walk. Your generous gift enables Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to provide compassionate care while continuing its research to improve the chances of survival for cancer patients worldwide. By supporting my walk, you are helping to end cancer.

Follow This Link to visit my personal web page and help me in my efforts to support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and The Jimmy Fund.

Thank you in advance for your support!
Emily Mack

Not TJ's

A lot of neighborhoods don't allow the owners to park Boeing 707s outside their homes, which is why actor John Travolta moved to Jumbolair, near Ocala.

It's not just another housing development, as you can tell by the 1.4-mile airstrip and the Boeing 707 parked next to one of the houses.

Located in the Central Florida town of Anthony, just north of Ocala, it's called Jumbolair, and it's the new home of John Travolta. After several years of whispers about his building a house here, the 49-year-old actor has taken up residence in his nearly completed mansion.

Travolta owns at least two jets, a Gulfstream and a huge Boeing 707B.

Simply put, there aren't very many non-commercial airstrips where planes of that size can take off and land. Jumbolair, with its long landing strip and massive jet wash berms at either end, is one of them.

About a decade ago, Travolta had a home in a fly-in community near Daytona, but was sued by neighbors who claimed his jet airplanes were too big and noisy for their facility. The very layout of his new house is testament to Travolta's love of flying.

It's located immediately off the main airstrip, and is designed so his jets can taxi right up to two outbuildings connected to the main structure, which is shaped like a squat air-control tower. Travolta literally can walk out his door, under a canopied walkway and into the cockpit, open the long mechanized gate and be airborne in a matter of minutes.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration pilot database, Travolta is qualified in several types of single and multi-engine aircraft, and has the highest pilot medical certification possible.

"We know thatTravolta's an accomplished pilot. ... A lot of people fly for the pleasure of it, and he's one of them," said John Clabes, an FAA spokesman. "If you have this many ratings on these types of high-performance aircraft, you're obviously a good pilot."

In layman's terms, Travolta has enough experience flying large multi-engine jets that he could easily switch to piloting commercial airliners for a living.

WEEI widens Web content: Site has archives, fantasy football

But this time it’s not just on the radio dial.
The broadcaster has been quietly beefing up its online presence - adding message boards, audio archives and fantasy football games - as it tries to turn WEEI.com into a local alternative to big national players like ESPN.com.
In the coming weeks Entercom plans to unveil mobile services tied to WEEI-AM (850) and WRKO-AM (680). People opting into the service will be able to get local sports scores, news updates, wallpaper and even ringtones featuring on-air personalities on their cell phones.

For instance, WEEI listeners might be able to download afternoon host Glenn Ordway shouting “you’re making my point” as a ringtone, said Jim Rushton, vice president and director of sales for WEEI and WRKO.
Last week WEEI launched fantasy football on its Web site, delving into an online game that is a big moneymaker, particularly among men. Fantasy football, which allows users to create and manage virtual teams, is a favorite on Yahoo! and ESPN.com. But WEEI wants to regionalize it, creating competing teams from WEEI in Boston and WEEI in Worcester that would battle each week.
Entercom is also talking with the Red Sox about seeking permission from Major League Baseball to stream the club’s games on WEEI.com, Kahn said.
Entercom retained the rights to the Sox radio play-by-play earlier this year.
Expanding its online brand allows WEEI to forge a stronger connection with listeners, but also gives the station’s advertisers more bang for their bucks, Rushton said.
It could also provide a cheaper means for some advertisers to associate themselves with the Red Sox or the Boston Celtics than buying a mention on the radio.
“Someone might want to have their name associated . . .(but) may not be able to afford the normal broadcast route,” Rushton said. “We can still provide an association with our brand” online or through cell phones.
Over the next three to five months other local Entercom stations, like WAAF-FM (107.3) and WMKK-FM (93.7), will add mobile content as well, Rushton said.
